As the requirements of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) approach implementation, KACCO is strengthening its commitment alongside its smallholder farmers to build a transparent, traceable, and responsible coffee supply chain. By collecting the geographic coordinates of plots using digital tools, the cooperative is working to ensure end-to-end traceability, from the producer’s plot to the coffee destined for international markets.
In the field, traceability begins at the plot level. For KACCO, compliance with the EUDR is not merely a regulatory requirement: it represents an opportunity to enhance the transparency, credibility, and
sustainability of the coffee value chain. In the farming communities of Kalehe, the cooperative’s teams are working alongside smallholder farmers to document coffee plots and gradually strengthen the traceability system. A key step involves recording the geographic coordinates of farms using tablets and digital tools.
This approach links each producer and their plot to precise data, enabling better tracking of
the coffee’s origin from production through to market. A collective effort to meet market demands The
success of this initiative depends above all on the commitment of the producers themselves. Despite the challenges posed by the remote locations of the farms, the small size of the plots, and the realities of rural life, KACCO members actively participate in the data collection and verification process.
This commitment reflects a clear goal: to produce coffee whose origin can be demonstrated, verified, and tracked transparently. Beyond geolocation, KACCO is working to gradually strengthen producer
documentation, the traceability of volumes, the monitoring of coffee flows, and the preservation of data necessary for a responsible supply chain. From the Farm to the International Market KACCO’s vision is to establish end-to-end traceability that links exported coffee to its origin: the farm, the producer, harvesting, processing, storage, and export. This approach not only helps meet the requirements of the EUDR but also strengthens trust among producers, the cooperative, trading partners, and consumers.
For KACCO, every piece of data collected in the field therefore represents much more than just
geographic information. It is an essential component of a value chain that is more transparent, more
responsible, and better aligned with the demands of international markets. A Commitment to
Sustainable and Responsible Coffee As the deadline for compliance with the EUDR approaches, KACCO reaffirms its determination to support its smallholder farmers through this transition. Behind every recorded geographic point lies a farmer, a plot of land, and a story. Through the “ ” initiative, which documents these origins, KACCO is gradually laying the groundwork for a coffee supply chain where quality, traceability, environmental responsibility, and producer dignity go hand in hand.
This approach illustrates the determination of KACCO and its members to remain connected to international markets while contributing to more sustainable coffee production that respects environmental standards.
